Curves helped me find myself again so that I could do this very important work.

When I joined Curves again on Sept 11 th 2017, I was at the heaviest I had ever weighed in my life. I was at 215lbs. I felt lethargic, ashamed, embarrassed and I was physically in a lot of pain. This was not my first time at Curves or on the weight loss journey. In my last curves experience May 2011, I was feeling pretty much the same way. I had lost almost 50lbs through another weight loss program and strict meal plan in over 6 months; however the maintenance plan got interrupted when I injured both my ankles within a year. My work out plan became almost non-existent. A few years went by and I stopped carrying about my weight, which was liberating in some ways and exhausting at the same time. I work in film, theatre and education… I need to be able to move and express myself, yet here I was in 2017 trapped within my own body. I spend a lot of time with youth working as an artist educator in remote reserve Indigenous communities. I needed to be a role model and Curves helped me find myself again so that I could do this very important work. My Curves Complete coach was Beba again and she welcomed me back with open arms. I told her how I was feeling and together we came up with a plan that suited my busy lifestyle. I travel a lot for work so sticking to a meal plan was challenging as well as being in town to get to the gym at least 3 days a week. We talked about healthy alternatives while on the road and portion control. We talked about ways to stay active while I was away. We talked about my emotions and how I might feel hungry, angry, or sad at times because of this journey. Beba asked a lot of questions. She really cared about how I was feeling. She was so encouraging. All of the coaches were very kind. Whenever I was in town and my schedule worked out I would head to curves. Curves Lynn Valley is a great place to work out. The atmosphere is friendly and supportive. Woman of all ages come there and it is very inspiring. The coaches are excellent and Friendly. The music rocks and I as I move around the stations I feel my power and strength coming back. My aches and pains are gone. I have lost 35.4 lbs, 22.5” overall and 26.62 lbs of just fat. I am still working out and my husband who is my biggest fan has also lost about 10lbs on this journey with me. We loved making the Curves recipes together. I feel strong, beautiful and healthy. I no longer dread going to the gym, I actually look forward to it. I finished Curves complete in Feb 2017. I am still maintaining my weight and enjoying life. This year I turn 50 and I am feeling fine. I am in the best shape that I have ever been in thanks to the Curves Complete journey and the support of wonderful coaches.

"It was time to put all the pieces together."

In January, 2017 I decided to re-join Curves North Vancouver because I’d had little success when I tried to commit to the gym program at my local Recreation Centre. I realized that I was missing the Curves Circuit 30-minute workout and the Curves Smart program. I knew I needed to take control of my weight and tness level and, sure enough, when I went back through the door of Curves in Lynn Valley, I knew I was ‘home’. Although I had been away for some time, everyone greeted me as though I’d never left. No-one was surprised when I began by trying to achieve all my goals at once but Coach Beba advised me to take things one step at a time. For 5 months, I worked really hard to meet my goals but still wasn’t willing to go on a calorie restricted diet – been there, done that. So although I worked out 4-5 times a week and did a lot of walking, I never lost any weight because of my poor food choices. When she saw I was becoming discouraged by the lack of progress, my coach decided it was time to put all the pieces together. She had a plan! I just hoped it would work. She told me I could do it. I had my doubts! In June, I began the Curves Complete Program – exercise, meal plans and motivation. Now - guess what? I’m hooked! I have never felt hungry. The family- friendly recipes are easy to follow and the program allows you to track your activity levels, the steps and the menus. Yes, it’s a menu plan NOT a diet. You are given a great selection of tasty, healthy food choices, food exchanges and recipes. So, if you have been sitting on the fence and wondering whether you should join Curves Complete - trust me! I have never been happier. My clothes fit again and I reached my goal of losing 20 lbs. in time for my wedding anniversary. Now, just 10 weeks into the program I have lost a total of 26 lbs, 11.5 inches overall and just over 15 per cent of body fat! Ann Bueschkens, August, 2017

"For the first time I felt invigorated. I felt this is for me."

For years I had been telling myself that it didn't matter that I was overweight. I was still the same person inside regardless of my size and convinced myself that I was okay. But, I wasn’t okay at all. I was physically out of breath, not able to walk far, had an aching back, hips, knees, etc., and constantly worried about my heart and the stress on it from my weight. My “aha!” moment finally came when I was in a dressing room at the local plus-sized clothing store, and I had to go up another size…again. I realized just how out of control I was and that I needed to change.

I spent the rest of that day soul searching and recalled a friend who works at a Curves in Arizona. I did some research and though I was very nervous, decided to take the plunge. I joined Curves that day and started my journey. I started seeing results almost instantly; I stuck to my meal plan and worked out 3-5 times a week. As I became stronger and more confident, I started trying new Curves classes and challenging myself further. After 2½ years at Curves, I’ve lost 100 pounds** and have never felt better.

The key to my success was realizing what I needed to achieve my goal. So, every day I would push myself harder and I would see more results. My Curves Coaches were there when I felt I couldn't push anymore. When I hit plateaus, they helped me and were there to guide me. Without the support of my Curves Coaches, I don’t think I would have had the motivation to keep going. I no longer get out of breath, have an aching back, knees or hips, and I am off of my high blood pressure medication.


This journey has been one of discovery, as I’ve learned to push myself to succeed. I am so proud to be healthy and strong. I owe my life to Curves and hope that my success serves as inspiration for others. If I can do this, anyone can!
